According to the DfE, safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is defined as:
  • protecting children from maltreatment;
  • preventing impairment of children’s mental and physical health or development;
  • ensuring children are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care; and
  • taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes.

Safeguarding is not just about protecting children from deliberate harm. It relates to all aspects of school life and involves a collective set of measures to ensure every child is kept safe. It includes child protection, health care plans, health and safety, site security, safety on school trips, anti-bullying work and so much more. A detailed definition can be found in our Overall Safeguarding Statement (visit www.cumbriaeducationtrust.org/policies/)

We have a number of policies and procedures in place that contribute to our safeguarding commitment, including our Child Protection Policy which can be viewed in the Policies section of our website.

Operation Encompass

Operation Encompass is a unique Police and Education early intervention safeguarding partnership which supports children and young people exposed to domestic abuse. Operation Encompass is the reporting to schools before the start of the next school day when a child or young person has been involved or exposed to a domestic abuse incident the previous evening. The information is given in strict confidence to a school’s Key Adult to enable support to be given dependent on the needs and wishes of the child. Castle Carrock Primary School engages with this scheme.

Cumbria Safeguarding Children Partnership

Every Local Authority area has an Independent Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB). LSCB’s are responsible for ensuring agencies work together to safeguard children and for testing how effectively this happens. The Cumbria LSCB became The Cumbria Safeguarding Children Partnership (CSCP) in 2019.
